The UK Is Off Track For Their 2020 Renewables Target
By Cynthia Taylor
The official UK government energy statistics that were published today reports that the UK his missed their indicated renewable energy targets for 2011-2012
Because of this the DECC will have to submit an action plan, that is amended for national renewable energy, to the European Commission by the 30th June 2014, this will set out the measures of getting the country back on track.
The UK is the only Member State that has failed at meeting their 2011 and 2013 indicative targets and they are not expected to reach the 2020 target.
Gaynor Hartnell of REA (Renewable Energy Association) has said that it was a near miss and she felt that if the UK government, had not interfered with its existing polices, by going after biomass power and rather stuck with the timetable they had for the Renewable Heat Incentive or had laid out a good framework for the biofuels, she thought that they would have met their indicative targets.
The figures have shown for 2011-2012; 3.94% of energy comes from renewables which is 1% short of the indicative target of 4.04%. While the majority of the EU27 had met their 2011-2012 indicative targets by the end of 2011. The EUROSTAT data shows that the UK has maintained its position as 25th of he EU27, on heating systems, transport fuels, and power supply.
Currently the 2020 target for the UK is he lowest across the whole of the EU27 (15%) and needs a high annual growth of 16.5% annually to the year 2020.
REA is the partner for the UK, for the “keep on track” project EU-wide and it assesses the progress of Member States towards their 2020 targets. The tracking roadmap for the Keep On Track project was published last month and has shown that the UK had missed its indicative 2011 REA Target.
REA also estimates that if renewable industry will expand sufficient to meet the 2020 targets, it will probably sustain 400,000 jobs over the countries supply chain.
