The Inauguration Of The Next Generation Of Off-Shore Wind Turbines
By Cynthia Taylor
The next generation of the UK’s offshore wind was inaugurated on the 12th September, 2013. Greg Barker Energy Minister officially opened the extension of the Gunsfleet wind farm that will generate 172MW, the wind farm is situated off the coast of Essex.
The 6M turbines were designed for the express purpose of being able to work at sea. They were made by Siemens and Dong Energy installed them. These turbines are more efficient and thus generate energy from offshore much cheaper says the company.
Earlier this year the two new turbines were installed at the Gunsfleet Sands III extension and are the first of the new turbines to be installed offshore. Prior to this they had been tested in Denmark on land and will now undergo three trial years to evaluate how they perform at sea. During July 2012 Dong Energy signed an agreement to purchase 300 turbines from Siemens for their wind farms in the UK.
The Chief Technology Officer, Henrik Stiesdal, from Siemens Wind Power has said that Gunsfleet Sands III is an important project for them, as I will bring out the 6MW direct drive turbines into the offshore environment.
These two prototypes underwent pre-testing under very harsh conditions and there has been tremendous progress made with the experiences that were gained from that. The turbines will now be tested under long-term conditions with normal energy production.
At a speech the Energy minister, Mr. Greg Barker said that the coalition was in the process of driving large new investment so that they will be able to deliver bills that are affordable and energy that is clean for consumers. Thus this is an important role for off shore wind farms. The Minister continued that the Gunsfleet Sand III Wind Farm offshore was a perfect innovative example.
In the past month Dong Energy began installation of a off shore wind farm off the coast of Germany and only a few days ago they received the royal seal of approval at the opening of the biggest offshore wind farm in Denmark.
