Richmond Cycling to Reduce Carbon Emissions
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
Richmond is trying their best to reduce carbon emissions and have earned themselves the accolade of being the city with the most cyclists in London. Although this is not having any significant effect on the environment at least 31% of the residents cycle at least once a month and if more boroughs joined in the initiative then the impact would be much greater. Richmond is responsible for 191,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide that is finding its way into the atmosphere. This puts them 13th in the list of worst co2 emissions from transport. Councillor Jerry Elloy has said that this figure is cause for concern and needs to be addressed.
He commented on the high volume of traffic that flowed through Richmond which is fed by two major routes and this makes it difficult to keep the amount of carbon dioxide emissions under control. According to another source however it has been said that households are responsible for most of carbon emissions, and not transport. It is quoted that 48% of carbon emissions come from housing whereas 21% comes from transportation.
Richmond has made a concerted effort as far as recycling is concerned and is definitely going in the right direction to put itself on the map as far as sustainability is concerned. It is currently recycling 44.7 % of its waste matter and this puts the borough at position 5 of the best recyclers in the city. The borough should be commended for its efforts in housing energy efficiency too, as this is an area that has been receiving attention.
In the long term the UK needs to reach a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 80% by 2050, and there are a number of projects that could be implemented to produce sustainable energy with a low carbon footprint. The borough of Richmond has been encouraged to incorporate ground source heat pumps among many other methods and none should be overlooked in the efforts to become number one in London for sustainable energy resources and low carbon emissions.
