Law Could Change to Allow Fracking under Houses
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
Drilling Without Owner Permission
The trespass laws are under scrutiny and may be changed to open the way for shale gas exploration to begin by energy companies. Ministers are apparently looking into the laws with an eye to reviewing them to allow fracking under houses, albeit far underground. Permission has to be obtained from land owners before any drilling can be undertaken but the energy companies do have recourse to appeal to the law if permission is denied.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) now has the system under review to see whether it is fit for purpose because any delays could become very costly to the energy companies. All options are being weighed and it has been said that to remove compensation would be difficult but that compensation could be drastically reduced.
It is well known that the government do not show the concern about fracking for gas that is shown by the public and various environmental groups, and the government has been backing the rights of the energy companies that wish to drill exploratory wells into the rock in the hope of finding viable deposits of shale gas which the government say could be the answer to the energy crisis that is being faced by Britain currently. The DECC say that the impact will be negligible because the wells will be drilled to great depths and will therefore not have repercussions close to the surface.
Opposition to fracking has been rife with all sorts of possibilities and what-ifs with climate change, minor earthquakes and water contamination being at the top of the list of priorities. There are similar laws that require permission from land owners for those companies wishing to conduct deep geothermal energy endeavours. The arguments on whether to allow fracking or not are far from over as has already been seen by the government at the few sites where exploration has been permitted and were disrupted by protesters and environmental groups from all over the UK.
