Fix Your Energy Tariff Whilst You Can
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
Energy suppliers are beginning to withdraw fixed rate deals from the market with some of the most competitive having already disappeared. In the past week Npower and Scottish Power have both dropped their best value deals. British households are being advised to get a fixed tariff deal whilst they are still available, because in all probability the cheaper deals that have been available will not exist by the end of the year. An online source has revealed that a number of special fixed tariff deals have been pulled from the market, and will not be offered again. Prices on fixed tariff deals are expected to rise in the near future.
Scottish Power has discontinued two of their best fixed energy deals, as has Npower. Both of these companies have replaced the deals with more expensive fixed tariffs which are considerably higher. Four of the major power supply companies in Britain have already announced price increases ahead of the winter, and the remaining two are expected to raise their prices soon. All of the Big Six Energy companies increased their prices for electricity and gas last year ahead of the winter months too.
Government are encouraging consumers to find the best price possible for energy and then to switch companies. Experts in the energy field are saying that it is a better option to get a deal that will fix the tariff for an extended period of time, while deals are still available. The question being asked by the general public is how long does one fix into a deal; for 18 months or for the longer terms available up until 2017. It would be best to do some homework on the prices being offered and also look to cancellation fees that could cost you extra should you want to change suppliers during your contract.
One factor that is not going to change is that electricity and gas are not going to get any cheaper and it would be best for consumers to lock in to a fixed tariff while they still have a chance to do so. There are many different deals available and with some comparative shopping you should be able to find one that will suit you, if you have not yet fixed your tariff ahead of the increases that are inevitable, as energy companies realign their price structures as winter approaches.
