Ed Davey to Deliver Strong Energy Consultation Speech
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
Prime Minister David Cameron will lend his support to Ed Davey when he delivers his Strong Energy Consultation speech in February. It is believed that pressure will be put onto the Big Six Energy Companies to ante up on their side of the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme. Energy companies are legally obliged to help with the reduction of carbon emissions in terms of the laws passed by the EU.
David Cameron is in agreement with Ed Davey that the ECO scheme be extended for another two years whilst cutting the carbon uplift that has seen energy companies being paid twice the value of any carbon that has been submitted under the ECO scheme. Doing away with the carbon uplift will allow the ECO Scheme to continue. Energy companies were given a target to meet with the ECO scheme and this has not been accomplished timeously.
The extension will allow those households that most need it to still receive insulation and better boilers for heating which in turn will help lower the costs of dual fuel bills for those living in fuel poverty or battling to meet their energy bills.
Energy companies may not like the decision that has been made for the extension and removal of the carbon uplift, but are however still required to deliver the services and achieve the same targets that were previously set. David Cameron came to power with his Greener Government and it would appear that he is about to make sure that the ECO scheme delivers. This will see a major reduction in carbon emissions in the UK and will also lead to a reduction in energy bills for home owners and homes that will stay warmer for longer.
