Community Scheme for Cambridge for Renewable Energy Possible
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
Cambridge Renewable Energy Forum is set to take place in February where there will be a call to implement a community energy generation scheme for the city of Cambridge. The merits of this project will be discussed at this meeting, which is being hosted by Transition Cambridge.
Speakers will include representatives from the new wind turbine project, the Reach Solar Farm project and will also include proposals for a city self-generating scheme which has been given the name of Cambridge Community Energy.
A spokesperson for the event has said that 100 wind power co-ops own 75% of onshore wind in Denmark, and that in Germany 65% of renewables are owned by communities and individuals whereas in the UK the figure is only at 10%. This source went on to say that there are some 700 community projects in various stages of planning across the UK at present, and begs to question why Cambridge should not join in. Transition Cambridge is the motivation behind several events which all aim at reducing energy usage and a turn towards renewable energy resources into the future.
