Cameron Says Government to Fund Cut in Energy Bills
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
David Cameron has announced that the UK government will assist homeowners with £1,000 to spend on the upgrading of energy efficiency in their homes. This comes after the prime minister and Deputy Nick Clegg said that the funding for insulation and new boilers will be reformed to make it more cost effective. It has been promised that a package will be announced that will also save the average household £50 per year on dual gas and electricity billing. They have stated that these cuts come without taking away any of the existing assistance for the aged, vulnerable or poor, and will not in any way sacrifice the commitment to change to green energy and low carbon energy generation.
In the new proposed assistance, when a new home is purchased then the buyer would potentially be able to spend up to £1,000 on any energy saving measures that are required. It is what both David Cameron and Nick Clegg have said is an all-round win situation. They have said that better insulation of homes will result in cheaper fuel bills and will also result in lower carbon emissions. The insulation industry would also benefit from this measure as service providers to the public.
The government has committed itself to lowering the impact that levies and taxes have placed on households, forcing more consumers into fuel poverty. There is a proposed rebate saving of £12 per year over the next two years as well as reducing the costs of the ECO scheme saving approximately £30 per annum, and network costs will be reduced by a once-off £5 saving. This saving will be passed on to the consumer by the energy supply companies. Ed Davey of the DECC has welcomed the move saying that this is the start to reforming the energy industry. He went on to add that this would in no way reduce the government’s commitment to carbon emission reduction or the taking on of hazardous climate change, but would assist households to become more efficient thus reducing energy bills permanently.
