British Gas To Offer Some Customers Free Energy On Saturdays
By Cynthia Taylor
The may seem surprising that a energy company is offering free energy. It seems that British Gas is breaking out of the mould and offering some of their vulnerable customers free energy on Saturdays.
The deal may sound too good to be true, however there s some logic about this madness. According to the industry experts, the purpose behind this strategy is to encourage their consumers to use more power over weekends. The company wants to encourage this, because over weekends energy demand is lower from their business clients over weekends.
British Gas has stated that the scheme will be available to about one million consumers in the UK, and that the consumers who will be getting this offering must have an installed smart meter. Analysis are questioning how complex the scheme will be and what it actually covers.
British Gas has a pilot of this scheme already launched, to help them figure out how it will work, and how easy it will be to not charge certain customers for their energy usage on Saturdays. The pilot project is to iron out the kinks to ensure that the free energy project to over a million will only happen on Saturdays and not on multiple days. If the pilot is successful, then British Gas plans to launch a bigger pilot later this year, and from there its expected that the scheme will begin to roll out in 2014.
One of the things that might be a discouragement is the fact that a smart meter must be installed. However the UK plans that everyone will already have a smart meter at the end of the decade.
One thing that must be noted is this offer is confined to electricity and not gas. This means that 60% of UK users energy bill is from gas, therefore, they will not benefit from this free offer.
