British Gas Hires Christine McGourty
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
There is so much uncertainty and mistrust from the public sector for the energy supply companies that British Gas has decided to bring on board Energy UK’s Christine McGourty to fill a newly announced public relations appointment in their midst. Christine McGourty has just been brought into British Gas to take the reins of corporate affairs. She was previously the director of communications and public affairs for Energy UK, and she will head the communications team as director of corporate affairs. She has a background of Energy issues which makes her ideal for this post, and is one of the first new appointments under the new managing director of British Gas, Chris Weston.
This appointment is a step in the right direction for British Gas, who has made it a priority to improve customer trust and understanding. Her work will include that of charity Shelters, and the lower income earners, and will lean heavily towards external communications. The main objective for British Gas is to simplify their customer concerns and bringing a positive ring to the dismal state of consumer relations at present between the suppliers of services and the end users. A focus will be placed on the positive elements being implemented by British Gas for the community.
Chris Weston was brought into the British Gas fold after the resignation of MD Phil Bentley, who left due to reported strategy disagreements that could not be resolved. Centrica, which owns British Gas is very pleased with the new appointments and looks forward to a more positive relationship with its consumers. Christine McGourty will also be part of British Gas leadership team which is parallel to a fully functioning board.
Ms. McGourty has said that she is looking forward to working with Government to assist in the positive outcome of both the Green Deal and the Energy Company Obligation. She has said that all energy efficiency initiatives are imperative in keeping the population warm, and also to find ways in which to minimise the costs of energy supply. She hopes that her new appointment will lead to a more positive consumer understanding, thus changing the attitude that currently prevails around the issue of mistrust surrounding the recent announcement of profits earned by energy companies that would appear to be excessive to the British consumer. Christine McGourty is looking forward to positive results and visible benefits.
