Abundant Returns For Renewable Energy Investors
By Anne Lewis-Schneider
A community based finance platform has launched a scheme to allow investors a green way of investment return for as little as £5 with a return of up to 8.6%.
The company called Abundance describes itself as a community finance platform. This allows the small investor to invest in renewable energy schemes and the bonus of a cash return on the produced energy.
Abundance has been operational since April 2012, and this is their fourth project. Oakapple Renewable Energy, which is based in Leeds, is responsible for this project. Monies invested will be put to use in a solar roof panel system in all new homes throughout the UK that fit the profile for government feed-in tariffs.
Abundance has funded other projects, one in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire for community wind turbines. An investment of £1.4million has been made in this project. This new project of theirs focuses on solar energy.
As with “peer to peer” lending Internet websites, the aim is to connect investors to communities and companies keen to finance green projects. Monies will be paid to bodies building and operating the project, and these investments range from a mere £5 in this new project to much larger amounts.
Returns on these debentures, which are more secured than shares, will be paid out bi-annually over a period of 20 years, from the profits of green generated energy. Investors can gain access to invested funds prior to maturity by selling these debentures through the Abundance web page. Abundance is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
In another project, The Spirit of Lanarkshire Wind Energy Co-operative, a share offer has been offered to raise £2.7million for wind farm projects in Coalburn and Strathaven. Created by Energy4All, a non-profit organisation, investments range from £250 to £20.000 and it has been said that returns are expected to be around 8.5% annually. The investment will be repaid after 20 years but funds may be accessed beforehand on request. This offer is open until next March, with priority being given to South Lanarkshire residents.
The focus on solar energy projects promises the investor returns on green renewable energy and with homeowners using green energy for free. Returns on investments have been estimated at between 7.35% and 8.6%.
There are a number of co-operatives around the country, offering renewable energy investments with financial reward.
