A Wilton Company Earthly Energy gets the green light for a second plant at Redcar
By Cynthia Taylor
Earthly Energy, a Wilton Company has been given the green light for a second plant that is energy from waste, this is a few months after work began on their first facility. Said Earthly Energy's Director Yotta Karanicolas.
Earthly Energy has plans to make Teesside a renewable energy “centre for excellence”, and they have taken steps forward with the plant at Redcar which will generate 5.1 MW's.
The company also has plans for four more plants of a similar size with a total package of £100m that is heavily backed by private investors and government.
During August 2012, the company was awarded a national first for their Middlesbrough AD plant when it was given a Regional Growth Funding of £1m.
In November Earthly Energy was the first to receive £8 million from the Green Investment Bank.
The support that the company has received will help them achieve their ambition to be the 'biggest commercial facilitator' of AD.
Anaerobic Digestion is a process that turns biomass into clean renewable energy, this process is widely used all over Europe but has been slow getting off the ground in the UK.
Reports have shown that the AD sector it has been growing at a 40% rate annually, and that many new plants have been built over the past year, which means that finance is available for building capacity in the sector.
The Earthly Energy plant will make use of garden rubbish, grass cuttings, food that is thrown away, pig slurry and and similar products for the Biomass.
Construction of the Wilton based plant began in April at the Middlesbrough’s Riverside Park. And the bosses at Earthly Energy are hoping to break ground for the new plant within the next three months so that it will be ready by early 2015.
The two facilities are expected to generate sufficient green electricity to be able to power 11,000 homes and extra energy that is generated will be fed into the National Grid.
People will be able to go and learn more about renewable energy, how it effects the local area, and the process of AD. Mr Karanicolas, also said that having secured the second site was very good news for the company and also the area. He continued that they had received a lot of assistance from professionals in business in Teesside and that this investment was a testimonial of their support.
